Week 31: 22 - 28 January

Jan. 30, 2023

Over the weekend, we met with the guy who is going to be doing more of the plumbing and HVAC installation to discuss the complexities of who exactly owns which parts of installation. Due to the fact that our house has a basement which wasn’t built by Atrium and that we have to get finished ourselves and the fact that the technical room where all of the heating, plumbing and other technical things come into the house, there was a question of what we needed to arrange on our side and what Atrium would cover.

Fortunately, other than the actual finishing of the basement, like walls, ceilings and floor, Atrium will take care of the actual installation of the plumbing and heating.

So when we arrived on Saturday morning, we saw that the last layer of isolation was installed and we’re now ready for the final concrete layer in the basement.

Outside

The little bobcat has also been moved to the front.

The garage was wrapped up with tarps and we climbed in underneath.

Peeking underneath the tarp, you can see the final layer of isolation.

Most of the wiring is complete.

Another view of the tarps covering the entrances.

A close up view of the mud that the electrician uses to hold the wires in place.

More mud.

More wiring for the workshop and freezer nook.

Cold Storage Room

Another view of the isolation layer and electrical work in the cold storage room.

Laundry Room

More work has been done creating space in the walls for cabling, internet, etc.

Basement Stairwell

The basement stairwell was blocked off, too, from above.

This is the view of the stairwell from above. While not perfectly sealed, it still kept some of the dust, heat and tar out from above.

Furniture!

Saturday was pretty exciting in that we actually ordered our first new piece of furniture for the house! Spending for the house has been a whirlwind and while we’re really close to the end, we’re trying to be really conservative with spending money until we know the final numbers. As such, we’ve been trying to strategically plan our furniture purchases so that we can make sure that we have something to sleep on in the new house besides the floor but not necessarily our final bed which is going to be fairly expensive.

One thing that I have adopted from the Czech lifestyle is multi-function spaces. Generally speaking, people here don’t have guest bedrooms in the sense of lots of empty rooms that aren’t used for anything except guests. They will have an office or some other room that also has a bed in it for when guests come.

We have opted for that strategy and while we’ll technically have one guest bedroom, it will also be used when we don’t have guests for a cutting table for Lauren and storage for various things. Both Stano and Lauren’s offices will have hide-a-bed’s so that we can have more guests at one time. We thus decided that since the hide-a-bed in Lauren’s sewing room/office will be the smallest and least expensive, then that is the one that we would get.

We ordered from an Italian furniture company, Natuzzi. They have showrooms across Brno and so as we started looking for furniture, we visited them and liked their furniture. There’s a 12- to 18-week lead time so we happily placed the order over the weekend, figuring that we should be ready at that point for the couch.

Below is the style of the couch:

And these are the two fabric samples we are considering. Both are dark shades of navy blue. We will probably go with the one on the right.
